Exciting Progress on Our Chicken Projects in Mozambique and Uganda

We’re thrilled to share some exciting progress from two of our poultry projects—one in Mozambique and the other in Uganda. These efforts are not only moving forward but are already starting to create meaningful impact.

Mozambique Hatchery Project – Almost There!

Our hatchery project on the farm in Mozambique is moving steadily toward launch! This has been a vision long in the making, and we’re now just a few final steps away from becoming fully operational.

All the needed resources are in place, and we’ve been finishing up important roof modifications to the chicken house so it can support the new function as a hatchery. That process took longer than expected due to an unforeseen setback—our lead builder was injured and unable to work for several weeks. Thankfully, he is recovering well, and the remaining work is now nearly complete.

Once the final touches are made to the building, the last step will be running electricity from the new pole (which we were recently blessed to have installed!) over to the chicken house. That power will support the incubator system (see image above), allowing us to begin hatching.

We’re hopeful that within the next couple of weeks, the hatchery will officially open—and with that, we’ll be incubating our first batch of 500 eggs!

Even though we already have buyers lined up for the chicks, our team also plans to raise a portion of this first batch to full broiler maturity. This initial run will allow us to verify the health and viability of the fertilized eggs and chicks. As the hatchery proves itself, we anticipate scaling up to nearly 4,500 eggs per month—a major step toward regional sustainability and economic growth.

While we will continue raising some birds on-site, the primary goal of this hatchery is to supply day-old chicks to local poultry growers—empowering small farms, boosting food security, and building a stable agricultural economy.

Uganda Broiler Project – Growth in Every Way

Over in Uganda, our broiler chicken project is seeing tremendous success.

The first batch of 500 broiler chickens was successfully raised and sold, and with the profit from that sale, the team launched phase two—raising 1,000 birds. That second batch has also now been sold, generating a strong return and allowing the orphanage to reinvest in yet another batch of 1,000.

This next round of chickens is already growing and is expected to be ready for sale within the next three to four weeks.

Even more exciting is what’s coming next: with funds now available for phase three of the project plan, construction on a second chicken house will soon begin! This additional facility will give the team capacity to raise another 1,000 birds at a time, effectively doubling their production.

While the full vision for this project still requires further funding to reach its final phase, it's already become a tremendous asset—helping the orphanage move toward financial sustainability. And this has come at just the right time, as the children are currently facing extra challenges due to the orphanage director’s recent serious accident.
