Help Derick Recover Fully and Return to the Children Who Need Him

Location: Uganda

Update September 29, 2025:

Derick was admitted back into the hospital on September 5th and underwent emergency surgery on September 7th for a craniotomy to address intracranial hemorrhaging caused by complications from his earlier hematoma drainage. By God’s grace, the surgery went well, and on September 25th he was discharged home with instructions for complete bed rest for one month.

He reports that his headaches have greatly improved, though he still has pain at the wound site. Thankfully, the doctors sent him home with pain medication, which has been helping.

We are so grateful for the love and support shown by so many of you. Because of your generosity, we were able to send 50% of his initial hospital bill on September 16th, and a payment plan is now in place to cover the remaining balance in two installments.

Recently, we received a new discharge statement that includes another month of medical care—covering medications, home care visits, consultations, and treatments through October 25th. These additional expenses were not anticipated, but we are trusting God to provide. None of this has taken Him by surprise, and we are confident He will continue to make a way.

Thank you for standing with Derick in prayer and in giving. Your support is making a real difference in his recovery and in lifting the financial burden during this difficult time.

If you feel led to give toward Derick’s ongoing care, you can do so through this fundraiser page. Every gift, no matter the size, brings us closer to meeting these unexpected costs.

Update September 2, 2025:

Over the past week, Derick has started experiencing severe headaches and blackouts again that may indicate another cerebral hematoma (brain bleed) and possible swelling (He indicated that it feels like his head is going to explode). He is scheduled for immediate testing this week to determine the extent of the issue.

Depending on the results, Derick may require another emergency surgery to drain fluids from around his brain. This development is particularly concerning since it's been several months since his original accident, and we had hoped he was on a steady recovery path.

These additional tests and potential surgery will result in significant medical expenses on top of the ongoing costs from his initial treatment. Any financial support you can provide would be an enormous help as we navigate these mounting medical bills.

We are asking for your continued prayers for his healing and wisdom for the doctors. We're deeply grateful for the support from those who have helped during this challenging time. We will provide updates as soon as we have more information from the tests. Thank you for standing with Derick and the children of Siloam Orphanage.

The Accident & Situation

On the morning of May 7, 2025, Derick—founder and director of Siloam Mountain Junior School & Orphanage in Uganda—was involved in a serious small motorcycle accident on his way to his employment outside of the orphanage. A vehicle struck him while in transit leaving him unconscious for several day and resulting in serious injuries that would require months of recovery and multiple surgeries.

Derick sustained tiny brain tissue injuries with swelling in the left frontal region of his head. X-rays revealed a fracture of both the tibia and fibula in his left leg, along with a dislocated ankle joint. He was immediately hospitalized, where doctors sutured and dressed his wounds and placed his leg in a cast in hopes that the injuries would heal without surgery.

He remained in the hospital for over three weeks, and on May 30, he was discharged home.

But something wasn't right.

Between May 30 and June 13, Derick began experiencing extreme, debilitating headaches and even episodes of blacking out. An MRI revealed that the brain swelling had not resolved—and worse, a cerebral hematoma had formed. On June 20, he underwent emergency surgery to relieve the pressure and drain the bleeding near his brain.

Shortly after, a follow-up x-ray showed that although his leg bones had healed, the ankle had not. On June 26, Derick underwent a second surgery—an Open Reduction Internal Fixation—to realign the ankle joint and secure it with metal fasteners.

We are so grateful to report that Derick has come through both procedures well. His headaches have subsided, his strength is slowly returning, and he recently shared, "Every day there is a great change." Through it all, Derick has remained faithful and hopeful.

Why This Matters

Derick is more than a survivor. He is the founder and director of Siloam Mountain Junior School & Orphanage, a home and school for over 600 children in Uganda. Through his leadership, children who once had no one have found family, education, and the hope of Christ. He is a father not only to his own son, but to hundreds of the most vulnerable.

How You Can Help

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Anthony and Valerie Rabak, the expenses for Derick’s initial hospitalization have been fully covered. But the cost of these two unexpected surgeries, recovery care, medications, transportation, and therapy is significant—and growing. Additional treatment may still be needed depending on how his healing progresses.

Derick’s absence during this time has also revealed just how deeply the children depend on him—not only for leadership, but for daily provision. The orphanage, home to over 600 children, has long operated under tight financial constraints. In addition to overseeing their care, Derick has worked an outside job simply to help cover food, education, and medical needs for the children. With him unable to work, that supplemental income has disappeared.

While this fundraiser is focused on helping Derick recover, we cannot ignore the impact his accident has had on the children who love and rely on him. His daily presence isn’t just important—it’s vital to their survival and sense of security.

Your donation today will go directly toward Derick's recovery—ensuring that all necessary care is covered so he can focus on healing and, in time, return to the children who miss him so deeply.

This is an opportunity to make a very real difference in the life of a man who has poured himself out for so many others. Your support is not just a gift toward medical care—it's a way of saying, "We see you, Derick. You're not alone."
