Chicken Layer Project in Mozambique

Supporting Sustainable Ministry

Location: Mozambique

Chicken Layer Project in Mozambique

Project Overview

Hope of a Nation exists to bring hope, share the Gospel, and equip leaders to transform their communities. Our agricultural projects play a critical role in this mission by providing hands-on training, meaningful work, and sustainable income that supports ministry operations in Mozambique.

The Chicken Layer Project is designed to complete the life-cycle of our existing poultry operation, enabling the farm to produce its own fertilized eggs and operate independently of unreliable third-party suppliers. By strengthening the farm, we strengthen the ministry — ensuring that resources are available to continue developing leaders, supporting orphans, serving communities, and advancing the work God has called us to do.

Why This Project Is Important

Reliable access to fertilized eggs is essential for poultry production. Currently, supply shortages and delivery delays often interrupt production, limiting income and stability. These disruptions affect not only our farm, but the ministry work our farm helps support.

By producing fertilized eggs on-site, the ministry will be able to:

  • Lay fertilized eggs consistently
  • Incubate and hatch eggs on the farm
  • Raise chicks into broiler chickens
  • Operate without interruption from external supply challenges

This project helps protect the ministry from uncertainty while creating a dependable foundation for long-term impact.

How This Project Advances Our Mission

Completing the Chicken Layer Project allows our ministry to steward resources wisely while creating multiple income streams:

  • Eggs sold for local consumption help meet community needs
  • Fertilized eggs sold to other farms support local agriculture
  • Day-old chicks provide opportunities for small poultry farmers
  • Broiler chickens generate income to sustain ministry programs

Producing eggs on the farm also significantly reduces costs. Fertilized eggs currently cost approximately $0.42 per egg, while internal production reduces that cost to approximately $0.15 per egg (primarily the feed for the layers and roosters). These savings directly support the ministry’s ability to invest in discipleship, training, and outreach.

Current Progress

  • One chicken house is fully constructed and in use for hatchery operations and broiler production.
  • A second chicken house is partially constructed and, once completed, will be dedicated to broiler production.
  • The existing facility will then be outfitted to support both the hatchery and laying hens.

What Needs to Be Done

We are seeking partners to help complete this project:

  • Complete construction of the second chicken house
  • Outfit the layer facility with:
    • Nesting boxes
    • Section barriers
    • Feeding and watering troughs
  • Create a secure egg storage area prior to incubation
  • Purchase 100 mature laying hens and 10 roosters to begin production , as raising hens from chicks would delay egg production by approximately 18 weeks.
  • Prepare for future expansion by adding:
    • 100 additional hens and 10 roosters, for a total of 200 hens and 20 roosters

The Long-Term Impact

This project is about so much more than poultry production.

It will:

  • Promote self-sufficiency and wise stewardship
  • Create stability that allows ministry work to continue uninterrupted
  • Provide training and employment opportunities
  • Generate sustainable income to support discipleship and leadership development
  • Strengthen local communities through dignity, purpose, and hope
